Tour of the United Arab Emirates: second win for Philipsen, uneventful day for Bardet

After the individual time trial (this Tuesday) and the first summit arrival (this Wednesday), the 5th stage of the Tour of the United Arab Emirates was promised to the sprinters this Thursday between Ras al Khaimah Corniche and Al Marjan Island (182 kilometers). And despite a nice count from Czech champion Michael Kukrle (Gazprom-RusVelo), who spent much of the day alone in the lead before being swallowed up by the peloton with three kilometers to go, this stage ended in a group finish.

As on the first stage on Sunday, Belgian Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin Fenix) was the strongest. He won ahead of Dutchman Olav Kooij (Jumbo Visma) and Irishman Sam Bennett (BORA Hansgrohe).

Romain Bardet, who finished sixth the day before, had a smooth day after battling with the favourites. He finished the stage in the heart of the peloton in 42nd place.

Overall, the Brivadois are still 11th, 43 seconds behind the leader, the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates), who had a little fright in the finale after a puncture with seven kilometers to go. But the two-time Tour de France winner made it back into the peloton thanks to the good work of his teammates.

This Friday, the 6th stage of 180 kilometers around Dubai should offer a new explanation between sprinters.
